In a hugely significant intervention – shaping the future of the monarchy on her historic milestone – the Queen stepped in to announce “it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service”.
The honour for Camilla will come as a surprise as, for the past 17 years, Charles and the Royal Family have insisted she will not use the title of Queen and instead will be known as Princess Consort. Her husband will be King Charles III.
However, a poll commissioned by the Daily Express last June found that 63 per cent of the public did not want Camilla to become Queen.
Palace officials hope the Queen’s move will help change their minds.
The Queen, 95, also pledged to devote the rest of her life to the service of the nation as she marked the historic 70th anniversary of her accession today. In the statement, signed “Your Servant”, she said it gave her “pleasure to renew” the pledge she gave on her 21st birthday that her “life will always be devoted to your service”.
She said that she remained “eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection” people continue to show after her seven decades on the throne – a time which has seen “extraordinary progress”.
She said she knew that Charles and Camilla would get the same support she had received, and sources said it is a sign she wanted Charles to have the same support Prince Philip gave to her.
