In her powerful address to us all, Her Majesty The Queen spoke of the grief of losing loved ones, the financial strain many are under and the current confusion of daily life. She paid warm tribute to workers in the NHS, the care sector and essential services, and encouraged all of us to be “united and resolute” together.
Her uplifting words acknowledged the seriousness of the moment, yet guided us to a time when, evoking those wonderful words of Dame Vera Lynn, “we will meet again”.
On Good Friday, when Jesus died, his friends were understandably devastated, and filled with fear and anxiety.
They could not imagine a way forward as they could only see obstacles in their way.
Yet Easter Day showed that even in the hardest times, the overarching love of God in Jesus is the light that illuminates the path ahead, however rocky.
And so often, that’s all we need – enough light to take one small step into a new day.
I have a confession to make. While stocking up on essentials at my local supermarket last week, I chatted with the checkout assistant as she scanned my shopping.
She mentioned that the store was closed on Sunday.
Surprised, I asked if that was so that the shop could have a deep clean due to Covid-19.
“No”, she said. “It’s for Easter.”
