Cops to try DNA profiling as 19 bodies beyond recognition

Unidentified and badly-charred bodies will be subjected to DNA profiling, which will help cops to ascertain the identity of the deceased. A total of 19 bodies have still not been identified.

New Delhi: Deepa Verma, director, Forensic Science Laboratory, Rohini, said: “Our two teams, including some senior experts, are working at the spot in Mundka. The team members will identify objects and lift samples for identification and collection. The samples will later be handed over to the investigating officer.”

Charred remains of humans have been found, so possibly a forensic DNA examination would be carried out to identify the identity of the deceased, she further stated.

SK Gupta, head of the crime scene, said that body remains at fire-related crime scenes are very difficult to detect, collect and handle.

Burned exhibits like body tissues at the scene often have a similar appearance, and bones, in particular, become discoloured, brittle, and highly fragmented.
