Fourteen-year-old Aahana Ganguly was a bubbly, energetic child, busy with friends and school till the pandemic struck. Cloistered in their Kolkata home over the next few months with no friends to interact with, Indrani saw her daughter’s personality change. “She became an introvert. If a teacher asked her to answer a question, her palms would start sweating and she would get a panic attack,” says the single mother.
She could barely concentrate on her assignments. Even getting her to comb her hair became a duelling match between mother and daughter. “School has become a drudgery. Most of the classes are boring because the teachers drone on and on,” says Aahana.
It’s been nine months since children started attending school from makeshift desks, living-room sofas, and even their beds. Now, the novelty of getting a “holiday” from school is wearing thin. Getting them to log in and be present for online school itself is a monumental task, says a harried mother, must we expect them to learn as well? It is a question many are asking. Students are logging on but are they learning? Ganguly doesn’t think so.
