New Delhi: A day after TOI reported that Palestinian terror group Hamas was behind the theft of cryptocurrency worth over Rs 4 crore from a west Delhi businessman’s wallet, Delhi Police said efforts were under way to pursue the suspects through international channels.
“We have identified a Palestinian and an Egyptian suspect in this case. We will be pursuing the investigation through available international channels. Today, the value of the stolen cryptocurrency is around Rs 4.5 crore. al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas was behind the crime,” said DCP (Special Cell) KPS Malhotra.
The Palestinian suspect, Naseer Ibrahim Abdulla, is a Hamas operative in Ramallah, while the Egyptian is Ahmed Marzouq from Giza. Abdulla’s wallet was seized by National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing of Israel as part of a bigger swoop on Hamas-operated cryptocurrency network.
A probe by the Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Ops unit of Special Cell led the agencies to track “Tumbler Accounts” used by Hamas to deposit cryptocurrency stolen from wallets across the world. Sources said Bitcoins siphoned off from the Paschim Vihar businessman were deposited in these Tumblers for a commission and money in US dollars was likely transferred to the Hamas operatives.
