Hyderabad: A belligerent chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday served a 24-hour ultimatum to the Centre to spell out its stand on procuring paddy from farmers.
Addressing his first major protest in Delhi – a dharna on paddy procurement organised at Telangana Bhavan barely two km from Parliament – he added that if the BJP does not come up with an integrated agriculture policy for the entire country, then the people of the country would topple the NDA government.
While the Telangana government wants the Centre to procure paddy from the state in the Rabi season, the Centre has refused to do so saying it will not pick up parboiled rice as there is little demand for it. Telangana is insisting that the Centre should procure every grain, like it does in Punjab. With the harvest yet to begin, the state is expecting about 50 lakh tonnes of paddy this time.
