Carlyle Thayer, emeritus professor of politics at the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy, explains the significance of the AUKUS grouping to Rudroneel Ghosh:
What’s your view of the AUKUS grouping?
The release of the Joint Leaders Statement on AUKUS on September 16 came out of the blue with no inkling that it had been in the works for several months.
AUKUS was primarily driven by Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison because of advice he was given on the rapidly changing strategic environment faced by Australia and the role nuclear-powered submarines could play in redressing these negative trends.
AUKUS is much more than providing nuclear-powered submarines to Australia. It is a fundamental commitment by Australia to work ever more closely with the United States and the United Kingdom to develop high-end military capabilities through greater cooperation and integration of their defence industries.
Quite simply AUKUS was a response to China’s increased military power measured in terms of its quantitative edge over the US navy and China’s rapid erosion of the United States’ qualitative edge.
Was it a mistake for Australia to ditch the submarine deal with France?
