Shah allays security fears, says database of lcr fingerprints in use, no leaks so far

Home minister Amit Shah on Monday sought to dismiss data security and privacy concerns aired by the opposition during the debate on the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Bill in Lok Sabha, saying that there was already a database of nearly one crore fingerprints of persons involved in criminal cases, stored in the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) being operated on a trial basis by NCRB; seven crore FIRs and 28 crore police records from the country's over 16,000 police stations merged into the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) operated by the NCRB; as well as database of DNA samples of over 12 lakh sexual offenders stored with the central forensic science laboratory at Chandigarh, all of which were being used for the past two-and-a-half years to solve criminal cases.
