Just like her healthy cake creations at her bakery, Delcie Lam shows that wholesome is always awesome when it comes to family.
Family is like a cake; only by having a solid foundation can you build on it with more layers and adornments. One person who is keenly aware of both is Delcie Lam, the founder, and owner of her namesake homegrown bakery Delcie’s Desserts and Cakes. Since the discovery of her passion for confectionery artistry at the tender age of 12, the 34-year-old has not looked back, as Delcie’s continues to be the pioneer of delectable desserts and cakes for health-conscious consumers and those with diabetes or allergies.
As the innovative bakery enters its 10th anniversary, we talk to the mother-of-two about Delcie’s journey thus far and how she wears her parenting hat with her chef’s toque so effortlessly.
What are some obstacles you face when juggling Delcie’s and two kids?
Lack of sleep mostly. While I try to give both my daughters my undivided attention, I have to put my phone and work aside until they go to bed. Only after will I be able to focus on my work till the wee hours of the morning.
I pop into the bakery's production twice or three times a week, but I am no longer part of the kitchen baking schedule as any sudden change (i.e. kids getting sick or vomiting) will disrupt the production and schedule of my staff.
This is a big plus for me as I can focus my energy on business development and R&D to develop new products, which is usually done at home when the kids are having their afternoon nap.
