Have you neglected emotional intelligence in your childs development? We explain why its important for them.
Parenting can be a challenge most of the time, even more so when your child is having difficulty expressing and working through emotional challenges. Emotions are a tricky subject with younger children, who often struggle to express emotions except in dramatic ways like throwing temper tantrums, screaming, or crying. While many children ‘outgrow’ this phase, it can be difficult for them to understand how best to constructively express negative emotions without a little help and guidance. How can parents foster emotional health and intelligence in our children?
When children are aged six to 12, it is the optimum time to help them develop well-rounded emotional capabilities as well as problem-solving skills that they will rely on throughout their lives. While it was formerly believed that the only real measurement for life success was a child’s IQ, today the EQ – or emotional intelligence – is being considered alongside other factors. Psychologist Daniel Goleman was well aware of the massively important effects of a child’s EQ back in the 90s when he penned his book ‘Emotional Intelligence’. Ever since, numerous studies and reports have come out to show that a child’s emotional intelligence is indeed a hugely important factor in their development.
