Narayan Suryajipant Kulkarni Thosar– most of us must not be aware of this name. Well, he was the one who went on to become the well-known saint and spiritual poet of Maharashtra– Samarth Ramdas– the one who showed the world the path of truth and righteousness.
Right from childhood, Ramdas had an inclination towards metaphysical contemplation and took the least interest in worldly attractions, unlike other children of his age. When he was eight, he lost his father. One day, on not finding him around, his mother got worried and searched for him everywhere. At last, she found her little son sitting in the corner of a room with his eyes closed. She went near him and asked, “I was looking for you all around the house and you are sitting here. What are you doing here alone in this room sitting with closed eyes?” The child's reply stunned her, when he said– “Mother, I am worrying about the world…”
At the age of 18, not willing to bind himself in the ties of marriage, he left his house. For 12 long years, he journeyed throughout India and minutely observed the condition and mindset of people. He found that besides the torturous attacks by the Muslim rulers, frequent floods and famines made the condition of the masses awful. On the outside, they were ruled by the invaders, and, from within, they succumbed to the ignorant mindset and irrational beliefs in the name of God. Samarth Ramdas's heart pained a lot on witnessing the state of society. Amidst his search for the right path to work for the wellbeing of mankind, he happened to meet the sixth Sikh Guru, Shri Hargobind Singh Ji.
