As we increasingly keep staring at the screens of our digital devices, we end up harming ourselves – our health, work and relationships.
Whether it's mobiles or laptops or tablets, screens are the first and last thing we see every morning and night! Whether in a hotel or in a meeting, in a car or in a café, we find most people staring at their phones, computers or any other technological devices. It's scary to think that a form of technology could be as addictive as a drug. A much broader concern is the amount of subtle damage this excessive screen addiction is creating.
A warning says, “Cigarette smoking is injurious to health.” Here we should add, “Screen addiction is also injurious to health.” In fact, it's also affecting relationships, family dynamics and life in totality!
Screen addiction is not only affecting adults but is also having a large impact on children. Children are being attracted to screens like moths to the flame. Watching the phenomenon of children increasing their screen time, Dr. Nicholas Kardaras, author of 'Glow Kids' says, “I've worked with hundreds of heroin addicts and what I can say is that it's easier to treat a heroin addict than a true screen addict.”
Children at this age should be engaged creatively to receive maximum brain development. But our kids start playing video games and can't stop. They go on watching You Tube videos and other sites and because of this over exposure to the screen, many children suffer from sensory overload, lack of restorative sleep and a hyperactive nervous system! Excessive screen time appears to impair brain structure and function.
