THE very last days leading up to the end of the river season are always a frenzy, as you try to pack everything in while there’s still time.
One beer-fuelled night just gone, the lads came up with a ‘Bailey’, their term for a 2 lb roach. Compliment accepted! How about a ‘Stoney’, one wag suggested, to honour chub champ Peter Stone? A 1 lb dace became an ‘Everard’, and a 3 lb grayling a ‘Neillo’, considering the threes Neill Stephen has nailed.
Of course, to get a famous fish, you have to fish at your limits and in the right place, and quietly I accepted the challenge of getting close, either for me or for one of my guided guys, before the 14th rolled around. These were sessions when I would have to be at the top of my game.
