Our oceans connect everyone and everything around us. We breathe ocean with every breath we take. The oceans are the great regulators on our planet, driving weather and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. Trade, culture, science, education and the arts tie us to the ocean. As scuba divers, this is our playground, full of adventure and discovery. Divers understand that people impact the ocean every day—the majority of the population doesn’t notice because the changes are hidden below the surface. Our ocean is underrepresented in the education system and misrepresented by the media. We are taught land and sea are separate, yet they are not; they are interconnected, and so are we. It does not matter what job you have, what country you live in or what kind of scuba diving you prefer, we are united by water, and underwater we speak the same language.
The ocean’s story is our story, and divers must give that story a voice. Today it’s easy to get involved in ocean causes, and that gives me hope for our future.
