Raiders continue to reshape roster
Silver & Black Illustrated|September 2020
The Raiders made a series of roster moves early in training camp, most notably the decision to part ways with talented-but-often-injured linebacker Marquel Lee.
Raiders continue to reshape roster

Lee had been on the Physically Unable to Play (PUP) list since the beginning of camp but couldn’t get healthy enough to pass his physical. And with that, the 2017 fifth-round draft pick’s time with Las Vegas ended.

The Raiders were extremely high on Lee during his first two seasons while having him play middle and weakside linebacker. Lee started six games during his rookie year and followed that up with a career-high 58 tackles (31 solos) the following season when he started 10 and played in all 16.

But injuries eventually took their toll and Lee was limited to five games last season and played sparingly on defense. Even in his limited time, Lee finished second in special teams tackles.

Las Vegas also waived rookie kicker Dominik Eberle from Utah State. The Raiders initially had hoped Eberle’s presence on the roster would provide a spark for kicker Daniel Carlson, who is coming off an uneven 2019 season when he missed seven of 26 field goal attempts (73.1 percent) after converting 16 of 17 the year prior.

Gruden feeling the heat?

Gruden feeling the heat?

“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
