IT SEEMS the way forward for Indian sports is franchise based leagues. Ten years ago, the Indian Premier League (IPL) emerged as a real game changer. Though some might argue that the IPL was not an original idea, pointing out that the Premier Hockey League, floated by the erstwhile Indian Hockey Federation in 2005, was the first example of a successful multi-city league. However, there is no quibble over the fact that the IPL with its cocktail of player auctions, on-field innovations and a healthy dose of glitz and glamour, provided a template for other sports to replicate its rip-roaring success for franchise-based leagues.
