For the second week in arrow, Lionel Messi scored elate winner to give under-pressure manager Luis Enrique some breathing space. The Argentine’s strike against Atletico Madrid came in the 87th minute and was the high point of an otherwise dull encounter wherein

Barcelona took the lead in the 64th minute through Rafinha before Diego Godin scored the equaliser for Atletico. The goal was Messi’s 13th at Atletico’s home ground Vicente Calderon — the highest he has scored in any away ground.

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to get back to his best, as he inspired Real Madrid to a come from-behind 3-2 victory over Villarreal. Gareth Bale, Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata scored in the second half to help Real hold on to the top spot in the La Liga points table.

The season’s surprise package, Sevilla, kept pace with the La Liga leader, Real, following a 2-1 victory over Real Betis, while Athletic Bilbao closed in on the European spots with a thumping 3-1 win over Granada.
