Elementary For Watson In Steering Dad's Army
CHENNAI Super Kings were crowned IPL champions for the third time after MS Dhoni led his Dad’s Army to final victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Australian lynchpin Shane Watson blasted a fine century to ensure his franchise returned to the tournament in fairytale fashion, following a two-year match-fixing ban.
The Super Kings continue to reign supreme – only Mumbai Indians can match their trio of title wins – having been semi-finalists at least in all nine seasons.
England’s white-ball wonders Sam Billings and David Willey picked up winners’ medals, making ten and three group-stage appearances respectively without featuring in the final.
Any notion that the IPL is a young man’s game was scrapped by the sheer consistency of Dhoni’s men, featuring the grizzled likes of Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh and Dwayne Bravo. The value of experience was borne out in their regular season campaign, final-over triumphs against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders proving their mettle.
Their big-game nous shone through once again at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as the Australian’s undefeated 117 made the serviceable Sunrisers’ score of 178 look paltry.
