THE old Liam Plunkett – the intimidating, wicket-taking quick – was back on display at The Oval this week, as he took 4-50 against Essex and had the later batsmen playing the ball from outside leg stump.
“I was cranking it up to where I wanted to be and I felt like the old me of the past few years,” said a relieved bowler afterwards.
The transformation is down to working with Richard Johnson, Surrey’s new bowling coach, and talking to Morne Morkel.
“Morne said ‘just back yourself’. I looked at some old footage and did some technical stuff with Jonno and spoke to Morne and worked on it this week.
“I felt so much better today – I attacked the crease a lot better and my pace was late 80s and I felt like I had some snap and control. I made an effort to run in straight and just back myself to bowl the ball and as soon as I got that snap I felt that I was set.”
It was playing in the opening Championship match, his first redball game since September 2017, which helped Plunkett, 34, see what was going wrong.
