IT’S probably fair to say Keaton Jennings is not going to hold his breath waiting for a call from England’s selectors ahead of this summer’s Ashes series.
After 17 Tests, the opener’s average stands at 25.19 and a sofar barren summer with the bat for Lancashire in Division Two of the Championship has not offered up any compelling evidence why he should take on Australia.
This week he again struggled, making scores of 11 and 0 in Lancashire’s match against Durham at Sedburgh. It’s been that kind of season for Jennings, who has made just three half-centuries.
He did play in England’s last Test – the win against West Indies in St Lucia way back in January. But he continued the woeful form that has followed his match-winning century against Sri Lanka at Galle last November. That run of scores reads: 1, 26, 13, 1, 17, 14, 8, 23.
No wonder then that others – primarily Jason Roy and Joe Denly – are being considered to partner Rory Burns at the top of the order for England’s first Test of the summer against Ireland at Lord’s later this month and, beyond that, the Ashes.
Jennings might still make a case to retain his England place in Lancashire’s next two Championship matches against Northants and Sussex. But even he knows that’s unlikely.
“For me it’s not only about this summer but the future,” says Jennings. “I’m trying to work towards a three or fouryear plan to try and nail down my opportunity.
