It feels like I say it every year but this year’s County Championship promises to be as good as ever before. And I don’t just say that because of the heavy investment of counties in bringing world-class cricketers to these shores, but also the few minor rule changes which will bring our game an added dimension.
This year, the seam on the ball will be made tighter, thus reducing seam movement and giving a County Championship game more chance of actually lasting the full four days.
Cast your minds back to the start of last season where excessive seam movement meant teams were regularly being rolled over for around 150 with 15 wickets falling in a day.
As a result, games were all over inside two days and that doesn’t help anyone. We all want to see exciting finales with the game in the balance going into the final session, don’t we? Also, you will have noticed, four-day cricket is being spread out a bit more this year with more games played in the middle of the summer. This is to help prevent the early-season conditions from curtailing too many four-day games before the summer weather really kicks in.
