THE pitch at the Wanderers was the main topic of discussion following the third and final Test between South Africa and India.
India salvaged some worthy consolation after defeats in Cape Town and Pretoria, with Mohammed Shami triggering a surprise collapse when the Proteas were 117 runs from their target with nine wickets in hand.
A scintillating finish had looked to have been unlikely when the umpires took both teams off the field due to concerns over the pitch’s condition on the third day.
The erratic bounce led to South Africa opener Dean Elgar being caught flush on the grille of his helmet after misjudging a delivery and requiring treatment from the team’s physio.
With light drizzle falling, the umpires elected to take the players off and bring the covers on with South Africa 17-1.
