This Is My Best Surrey Squad Yet, Says Stewart
WITH one of the strongest squads assembled during his tenure, Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart is confident of success this season and victory over Hampshire in their opening fixture has only increased his certainty.
Surrey’s win at The Oval was completed on Monday as the hosts triumphed by 139 runs.
New skipper Rory Burns got the new season off to a decent start with 46 in Surrey’s first innings but it was the second innings where sparks really flew – with 20-year-old Ollie Pope smashing an excellent 145 to help set Hampshire 472 to win.
Sam Northeast offered resistance on the final day, eventually reaching 129, but 19year-old spinner Amar Virdi took the headlines with 4-79, and Stewart is pleased by the makeup of his 2018 squad.
“We were hurt by losing Mitchell Marsh (to an ankle injury) a week before the start because we had balanced it up, but obviously getting Dean Elgar is fantastic,” said Stewart.
“I would hope our squad is there or thereabouts as one of the best I have had in my time. There haven’t been many changes but year-on-year experience and a new captain in Rory Burns who will stand up very well.
