FOR... ENAMELWARE
1 Enamel Factory, Kate Samuels, Herne Bay, Kent‘
The sea has always been in my life,’ says Kate Samuels (right), who used to live in Cornwall before settling in Herne Bay, where her studio is moments away from the pebble beach. The North Kent coast provides abundant inspiration for the mugs, plates, bowls and plaques she creates there. Kate has been enamelling for more than 15 years, and every item she makes is hand-drawn and painted using the sgraffito technique then kiln-fired for a lustrous and hard-wearing finish. Colourful, graphic designs such as the ‘Sails’ plates (£16) and ‘Sea’ mugs (£12) reference both the seaside and camping adventures with her two children. For special occasions, Kate can also create personalised and bespoke pieces (07738 207529, enamelfactory.co.uk.)
FOR... STYLISH CERAMICS
2 Adam Frew, Portstewart, NI‘
My work does have influences from the coastal weather and landscape,’ says potter Adam Frew, who is based in Portstewart on Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast. Eastern forms are another reference point for his hand thrown ceramics, including functional tableware (mugs, jars and bowls) or large, one-off vessels for display. Adam’s pots feature an expressive mix of textural mark making and splashes of colour to reflect the palette of the shoreline. Prices range from £35 for a mug to £850 for a large pot.
