Natural Born Sparkle Like A Diamond
Condé Nast Traveller India|December - January 2020
Nothing can replace the rarity and brilliance of natural diamonds. These gifts of nature have stood the test of time for eons, and are the epitome of not just beauty but also eco-conscious luxury. Every diamond carries with it—quite literally—a piece of the earth that signifies eternity and purity. We trace their journey from then to now—three billion years ago to be precise, to a mysterious place and age that scientists spend their lives deliberating.
Natural Born Sparkle Like A Diamond

Many have waxed eloquent about the diamond—not only are they a girl’s best friend, they are also forever. In fact, jeweller Yair Shimansky famously said, “The beauty of a perfectly-cut diamond lies not just in its exquisite aesthetics, but in the way it makes you feel.”

Real diamonds are celebrated heirlooms passed down from one generation to the next, adding unique and poignant personal stories along the way—be it an engagement ring, an anniversary surprise, a present for a new mother, or just an indulgent gift to yourself; a natural diamond symbolises pure love and connections. Real emotions, after all, deserve real diamonds. They truly are authentic and rare gifts of nature. Much has been said about the socio-economic impact of these coveted gemstones. The fact remains that 83 percent of the water used for diamond mining is recycled, and real diamonds boast 69 percent less carbon emission per carat than laboratory-created diamonds. Moreover, the diamond industry today generates benefits worth $3.9 billion for those working in it. Add to that ethical sourcing, and real diamonds become shining beacons of eco-conscious luxury. And while you may be well-versed with the 4 Cs of diamonds, do you know much about the actual origins of these spectacular stones? We track their timeline to long before even dinosaurs roamed the planet.

TRACING THE JOURNEY

Rewind three billion years: natural diamonds were created under rare conditions of intense temperature and pressure 100 miles below earth’s surface in what can only be dubbed as a pure miracle of mother nature. Small quantities were propelled to the earth’s surface by volcanic eruptions over 300-400 million years ago. Natural diamonds got their name from the Greek word ‘adamas’, fittingly meaning ‘unbreakable’, as they are lasting symbols of enduring strength owing to their genesis.
