A colour that emits all tinges of divinity, a shade that traditionally ushers you to a new beginning, a hue in which the bride appears more beautiful! Indeed, it is the searing colour that exquisitely represents the splendour of idyllic togetherness and the holiness of perpetual love.
The sanctity of the colour red illustrates varied sentiments of Indian weddings, and this is why the colour red is majorly dominant in Indian nuptials. It is a shade that renders nuances of love and purity, also symbolising festivity. This colour is a vital part of every Hindu wedding in some way or the other, irrespective of caste or creed. Essentially, it is the colour of a novel life that indicates a significant change of role, of a traditional Indian woman. She has to leave the comforts of her parents’ abode, and begin relations anew at her in-law’s place. Further, the bride’s first step into her new home is characterised by the ritual where she has to place her feet on a plate filled with red water reddened with kumkum or lac. She enters her new abode leaving a trail of the red footprints. This signifies the ushering in of prosperity and the commencement of the new role of a bride. In the Indian milieu, red is also connected to the rising sun and according to astrology, the planet Mars, in charge of marriages, is also red in colour. For this reason, Hindu brides are asked to wear red during the wedding ceremonies, since it stands for opulence and fertility.
