IN an age and time when abortion is legal, there are a lot of reasons why women still opt to have backstreet abortions. The stigma around abortion is preventing many women from choosing to go for a safe and legal termination at a public or private institution. Most women who settle for a backstreet abortion fear being judged and made to feel shame for deciding not to have a baby.
WHY GO THE ILLEGAL ROUTE?
Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, vice chairperson of Sexual Health and Reproductive Justice Coalition (SRJC), says a woman is well within her rights to terminate her pregnancy for whatever reason.
She might choose to terminate the pregnancy due to broken relationships, socio-economic reasons or even rape
