The Actress Has an Eagerly Awaited New Role

When it comes to cool grandmothers, Meryl Streep surely has to be up there.

The legendary actress has become a grandmother for the first time, with daughter Mamie Gummer giving birth to a baby boy, to fiancé Mehar Sethi (36) – and the Mamma Mia! star says she’s excited about becoming a nana.

“I’ve been working like mad for quite a while, so I’m getting ready for my first grandchild,” she said before the birth. “My daughter’s having a baby, so I’m going to ruin her life. I specialise in unsolicited advice!”

Although both Meryl (69) and Mamie (35) are notoriously private – the family hasn’t released the name of their wee bub just yet – Meryl hasn’t been shy about publicly spreading her joy for her eldest daughter, with whom she starred in 2015 film Ricki and the Flash.

“Motherhood has a very humanising effect,” says Meryl, who’s also mum to Henry (39), Grace (32) and Louisa (27). “Everything just gets reduced to essentials. I think that you find your own way. You have your own rules. You have your own understanding of yourself and that’s what you’re going to count on. In the end, it’s what feels right to you... not what your mother told you.”
