I hate cleaning! Why clean when you can chat, drink, laugh... in fact, do anything other than clean? I’ll tell you why I hate it so much. My parents had a big house to accommodate their big whanau. My dad, a carpenter, kept building on extra rooms as more babies arrived and wider family members came to live. And it had to be cleaned.

My mum was a ferocious cleaner. Skirting boards weren’t just decorative, they were dust collectors and needed cleaning, just like the vacuuming needed to be done, and the dusting, and the toilets and ... well, you get the picture. Mum used soapy hot water for just about everything. For mopping, she’d push the boat out and pop a capful of Handy Andy in. That was pretty much our cleaning armoury. Elbow grease did the rest of the work.
