Rumours of duchess rivalry are laid to rest.
Feud? What feud? It was all smiles and laughter, chats and applause as the Duchess of Sussex sat with the Duchess of Cambridge in the Royal Box for the Wimbledon women’s singles final, to watch Romania’s Simona Halep defeat Serena Williams.
It was a public demonstration of friendship, with Meghan flanked by Kate and her stylish sister Pippa (35) – but was it real or orchestrated?
Body language expert Judi James is in no doubt that it was genuine. “At times, they looked like three sisters. There were long bouts of mirrored body language between them and lots of eye contact,” she says.
“It seemed to be Meghan making them all giggle.”
It was the second time Kate and Meghan (both 37) have attended Wimbledon together, the first being last year.
In the 12 months since, gossip about divisions between their households reached a crescendo, with rumours of Meghan getting above herself, Kate giving her the cold shoulder, William (37) pulling rank, Harry (34) getting bored as the spare to the heir...
Whatever the truth, Judi says the visual evidence is that it’s all behind them now.
“If there has been any coldness, things could just be back on a stronger footing again. Meghan shares her laughter with Pippa, and Kate is also making an effort, leaning across to create head-closeness and paying lots of eye-attention to Meghan as they chat.”
Meghan also visited Wimbledon with her aides earlier in the week, in a private capacity, to support her friend Serena. It didn’t go well.
PR consultant Sally Jones sat further along in the same row and claims a close protection officer told her not to take any snaps. She says it’s an example of “silly control freakery”, adding, “It saddens me that they are weakening their impact through this behaviour. It makes them look silly, it’s childish and takes us for fools.”
