Use... hanging furniture
Elevated seating will create the illusion of more floor space and make your garden seem bigger
SOLO SEAT A quiet corner is all you need for a reading or relaxing nook (above). A hanging bamboo egg chair keeps the ground and sightlines clear to boost the feeling of space, while the natural material complements the outdoor setting. Highlight the area with a cluster of pots containing foliage plants of varying heights and scales.
SUN TRAP Opt for a hanging chair on its own frame so you can easily move it around. A chair like this one (left) can be turned to face the sun or slid into the shade, making the best of the weather.
CHILL OUT A classic hammock is perfect for stringing up in a small area for afternoon snoozes. If you need the space back later in the evening, simply take it down, fold it up and pop it away. Hammocks can be picked up for pennies on second-hand sites.
MAKE A STATEMENT A showstopping hanging chair in an exotic rattan style or eye-popping colour will make a striking focal point in your outdoor area and distract from the lack of space. A mix of colourful cushions piled high will also make a feature of your seating.
Use... wood pallets
There are lots of clever ways to upcycle these timber structures for a compact space
SET UP A PRIVATE BAR To make your own little entertaining zone (right), cut the top section off a pallet to use as the flip-down surface and attach using two strong hinges and chains. Add a plank of wood to act as your serving board.
