Dr Praveen Jeyapathy, Diabetologist at IMC – Sugar Apollo talks about diabetes, its causes and implications for women
WHAT IS THE PERCENTAGE OF WOMEN SUFFERING FROM DIABETES? WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES THAT ARE SPECIFIC TO WOMEN?
“World over there are 199 million women with diabetes and it's projected to increase to 313 million by the year 2040 as per the International diabetes federation. Women can present with the usual symptoms of diabetes like increased urination, thirst, hunger, lethargy, blurring of vision, burning sensation of feet and weight loss. However, genital and urinary tract infections are common in women. One needs to remember that many individuals diagnosed with diabetes have no symptoms at all.”
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TODAY FOR OMAN IN DIABETES CARE WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN? AND WHAT AND HOW IS IMC-SUGAR APOLLO CLINIC MANAGING THE CHALLENGES?
“The biggest challenge for any patient with diabetes and his/her health care team is ensuring good control and avoiding complications. World over, even in the best setting, most patients unfortunately are not well controlled as per various studies.
Compliance to treatment and follow-up can be challenging with the busy life we have today. Time for self-care to focus on exercise is limited due to work/family obligations. Food choices are in plenty today and often they are energy dense, which is not right in diabetes.
