Securing the last piece of sticky tape on the wrapping paper, I make sure there are no loose ends before tying on a ribbon and gift tag. It’s Christmas Eve 2019, and I’ve been hunched over the kitchen table wrapping presents for the past few hours, having only returned from my final trip to the shops that evening. Looking at the clock, I’m not surprised or concerned that it’s 1.30am, and after putting all my gifts under the tree, I head to bed.

I’ve always started my shopping with just a couple of days to spare. Even though they’re grown up, my daughter, 30, and son, 27, still love arriving on Christmas morning to a mountain of gifts.
