Twenty years ago, the world watched in horror as the deadliest terror attack unfolded live on TV. As the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center came crashing down in Manhattan on the morning of Tuesday 11 September 2001, it became a date etched in everyone’s memories.
We all remember where we were, what we were doing and how we learnt about the unimaginable catastrophe. Who can ever forget those haunting scenes of people jumping from the windows to their death, of the gigantic buildings collapsing in on themselves, and the ash and dust that engulfed the city?
On that fateful day, almost 3,000 lives were lost, and in the years that followed, many more innocent people died, including firefighters who suffered long-term effects from ash inhalation, and the many who’ve died during the war on terrorism.
Now, 20 years on, as the political landscape of the world hangs in the balance, we remember the lives lost and the lasting effects of 9/11.
