Gillian Anderson will play Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming series of The Crown (right), and she’s said it was her hardest role ever. However, Meryl Streep portrayed the former prime minister in the 2011 film The Iron Lady (above), and won an Oscar for it.
Queen Elizabeth I
Cate Blanchett won several awards for her Queen Elizabeth I in 1998’s Elizabeth, including a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. But Dame Judi Dench (inset) won the Oscar for best supporting actress playing the same character that same year, in Shakespeare in Love.
