In the days, weeks, months and years after their beloved mother’s tragic death, Princes William and Harry were quietly encouraged to carry on, bottling up their grief and maintaining that very British stiff-upper-lip approach in the face of unimaginable sorrow.
But now, in an astonishing outpouring of love, the young royals have made the ultimate tribute to “the best mum in the world”. Opening their hearts in the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, which aired on Three last week, William and Harry spoke not just of their heart-warming memories, but also of their enduring grief.
“She’d engulf you and squeeze you as hard as possible. I miss that feeling,” Harry said in the doco, which has been described as a “love letter” to Diana from her sons and been watched by millions around the globe.
The princes paint a picture of a happy childhood with a mum who was determined to show her sons a loving and normal life outside of palace walls. They spoke of Diana’s “naughtiness”, and recalled her sneaking them into movies with her, smuggling sweets into boarding school and being driven around country lanes in their mum’s BMW with the top down and Enya blaring.
“Our mother was a total kid, through and through,” Harry, 32, explained. “When everybody says to me, ‘So she was fun, give us an example,’ all I can hear is her laugh in my head. That sort of crazy laugh of where there was just pure happiness shown on her face. One of her mottos to me was, ‘Be as naughty as you want, just don’t get caught.’”
