For more than 40 years Dame Julie Walters has delighted fans in movies like Educating Rita, Mamma Mia! and Harry Potter. But for the past 18 months the acclaimed British actress has been hiding a terrifying secret.

Last week, the Golden Globe winner revealed she has been battling stage three bowel cancer and only feels able to talk publicly about it now because she has been given the all-clear.

“I had some symptoms and not others,” the 70-year-old Billy Elliot star shared of the lead-up to her diagnosis. She had visited her doctor with indigestion and “slight discomfort” in 2017, and the following year she made another appointment after experiencing stomach pain, heartburn and vomiting, although she didn’t have blood in her stools, which is another common symptom.
