The sitcom star speaks out about her battle

Christina Applegate has come a long way since her days as blonde bimbo Kelly Bundy on Married... with Children – 22 years, in fact, since she wriggled into a black leather mini skirt, plastered on half a stick of crimson lippy, boofed up her unruly mane and played the outrageous teen tearaway in the legendary sitcom.

Now 47, Christina herself is married with children (or at least child), and over the past two decades she’s proven her acting chops in a vast array of film and TV productions from hit movie Anchorman to sitcom Up All Night.

But right now it’s her Netflix dramedy Dead to Me that has everyone’s attention – not least because she insisted the show’s makers include the one thing guaranteed to make her shake with fear.

The LA born-and-bred actress was 36 when a routine MRI scan revealed something amiss in her left breast.

She’d been having regular diagnostics since her early 30s because her mum Nancy had not one but two battles with breast cancer. But despite her family history, Christina “never in a million years thought it would happen to me”. She was wrong.

A few days later, her oncologist called asking her to “come in and talk” about her biopsy results. She instead demanded to know the results right then and there, and the news wasn’t good.
