It is paradoxical that in a land where the goddesses are enshrined with power and considered as the dominant force in Hinduism, women in India are subject to many abuses. The quality of life is what the country and the law makers need to address, rather than restrictive laws that take away a woman’s right to peace and self-evolution.
Sex determination
The trauma for women begins in the womb. While in advanced nations, the sex of the unborn child is a happy curiosity and preparedness with clothes and nursery of choice colours, in India it means whether to go with the pregnancy or not. We have the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994 (PNDT), that was amended in 2003 to the PreConception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act (PCPNDT Act) to improve the regulation of the technology used in sex selection. Grotesquely, we discover mass infant graves from the backyard abortion systems, based on sex determination. What can laws really do when the mindset of Indians rests in the distress of having a girl child and composed confidence in having a boy child.
