Mark?’ From up in the loft, I called down to my husband. I’d been putting the storage boxes away. We’d moved into this new home a week ago.
‘What is it, Bree?’ He looked up from the landing.
‘I’ve found an old mirror up here,’ I said to him. I stood at the entrance to the hatch space, clutching an oval wall mirror with a simple frame of plain dark wood.
‘The last tenant must have left it here. I thought it might look nice in the spare room.’
‘Hand it to me,’ Mark said, climbing the ladder to the halfway point and then gently taking it from me.
I stepped down, while Mark took the mirror to the bathroom to wipe away the thick covering of dust.
When he’d given the mirror a good clean and polish, I thought it was quite presentable. However, Mark wasn’t nearly so sure.
‘It looks like a relic from the 1970s,’ he remarked.
‘Well, vintage is “in” now, you know,’ I argued.
‘I hope you don’t want to decorate the spare bedroom in horrible, swirly patterned wallpaper, as well!’
‘Of course not!’ I grinned, amused at the thought.
When Mark fixed the mirror onto the wall by the window in the spare room, it looked as if it was meant to be there.
A month later, we’d finally got into a routine. It was a new start for us and we were slowly getting used to life in a new town.
Mark had been thrilled when he was offered the promotion. I was, too.
