One of the foremost architects of Bangladesh, the famously low-profile Marina Tabassum has, time and again, proved how architecture that finds authenticity in a local vocabulary of materials and design can be exemplary at a global level. These ideals, which have veritably defined Tabassum's career trajectory, are now at the heart of an ongoing exhibition, "Marina Tabassum Architects: Bangladesh", at the Architekturmuseum der TUM in Munich, on view till 11 June. Curated by Vera Simone Bader and Tabassum, the exhibition encompasses the latter's richly diverse oeuvre, which features a wide variety of prestigious government projects, spiritual centres, refugee habitats, and residential projects.
Elaborate models of Tabassum's career-defining works occupy three different rooms at the exhibition venue: a room dedicated to projects based in the countryside in Bangladesh, where people live in close proximity to nature; another room marked by projects on the outskirts of Dhaka, where closely knit settlements engender an inviolable sense of community; and a third room that showcases the architect's key mega residential projects in the city centre.
