Plein Air Celebration
American Art Collector|March 2023
Artists come together for an annual Plein Air Festival to revel in the beauty of the Florida landscape.
Plein Air Celebration

For one week a year, the Tequesta, Florida, area comes alive with a plethora of free demonstrations, workshops, paint-outs and, of course, opportunities to purchase astonishing works of art. Hosted by Lighthouse ArtCenter, the Plein Air Festival, is celebrating its 10th year. “This is a spectacular show, and the community is so involved,” says ArtCenter curator Janeen Mason. “People wait for this every year—we’ve even had people fl y in because they’re following artists that are participating.” ArtCenter executive director, Jeni Licata, also notes that the “festival brings the best of the best plein air artists from all over the country to capture the beauty of our local landscapes and coastlines on canvas.”

Through the Mirror

It’s been said that art is a mirror for the person looking into it. The viewer sees themselves. Even when the subject doesn’t look like them, or is even human, or is even living. Artists may be painting very specific things from their own being, but the viewer can instantly rewire that to fit their lives with just one glance.

Grrowing up on a farm in West Texas, Michael Tole was perusing his family's 1956 Collier's Encyclopedia when the color plates of Baroque paintings caught his attention. Today, he paints inventive Baroque and Rococo figurative extravaganzas that look like they could be part of a Renaissance art collection.

B.C. NOWLIN & SHARI LYON Skyward

C. Nowlin is, and always has been, unapologetically true to himself. In high school, he got kicked out of art class because he insisted on painting burning buses to illustrate a school field trip.
