If you're a regular visitor to our neighbouring countries, you're all too familiar with the hustle and bustle at the border post. It's not uncommon to be held up for two or three hours, and if you arrive late in the day, there's a good chance you'll only hit the road again after dark. That's precisely why there are so many overnight options near our border posts.
Kareespruit Game Ranch is just outside Zeerust, on the N4 route to Botswana. Conveniently close to the main road and the outskirts of town, you can simply check in here, have a good sleep, and clock in bright and early at the Skilpadshek border post that's just 50 km away the next morning.
However, Kareespruit isn't only a handy overnight stop. It's less than three hours away from Gauteng and with its beautiful surroundings and numerous tourist attractions and activities, it's definitely worth camping there for the weekend.
PICK ONE OF 10 numbered campsites arranged in a semi-circle around the ablution block. The campsites aren't demarcated and aren't allocated in advance; so you can park your caravan wherever you fancy, as long as it's in the close to one of the numbers.
Most of the stands are much larger than standard, some even measuring up to 30 x 30 steps. The layout and size of the stands make it convenient when you're only spending one night and don't want to unhitch your caravan, as it's big enough for your towing vehicle and caravan to fit comfortably.
There are trees and grass all over the campsite, but there are open spots where the grass has been worn away. Each stand has a blue power point, tap, camping light, bin, and a built-in braai without a grid.
The ablution block is tiled inside and looks brand new. The modern vanity with its granite countertop and basins provides a luxurious feel. There are separate male and female facilities on either side of the wheelchair-friendly bathroom.
