Having taken part in a motorhome holiday across Argentina, followed by another to Japan, visiting southern Africa was now at the top of our bucket list. Although Sharon and I consider ourselves independent travellers, we knew very little about Namibia or Botswana, so decided to book an escorted trip with the Caravan & Motorhome Club that gave us the flexibility to drive ‘off piste’ during the day, with the comfort of knowing that we always had an end destination in place. Having fellow travellers to meet up with in the evenings, to share stories and compare notes, added to the enjoyment.
We were very fortunate to find ourselves part of a group of 10 couples, who all got on very well. Most of them had travelled pretty extensively and we loved hearing their tales of past adventures and future plans.
Our group was completed by our enthusiastic tour guides, Magda and Johan, and mechanic Zane, who was with us for the entire journey and proved to be a godsend. Whatever vehicle problem was thrown at him, he got it sorted!
Start from the capital city
We were given a few flight options and elected to fly from our home airport of Inverness to Heathrow and then on to Johannesburg. From there, it was a two-hour flight to Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.
After a journey of 27 hours, we were delighted to arrive at our excellent accommodation for the next two nights, the Windhoek Hotel and Country Club. Although our time was short in the capital, we were very keen to explore and the following morning, we joined an informative city tour.
