Thyme can be grown in most provinces of South Africa. It grows well in Mediterranean-type regions where winter rainfall ranges from 500mm to 1 000mm/year.
It prefers light, well-drained soils with a pH of 5 to 8.
Although thyme grows easily, especially in light, dry, stony calcareous soils, it can be cultivated in heavy, wet soils. However, it is then less aromatic.
