A recent study conducted by Bee-Tech Group near George, Western Cape, provided valuable insights into the pollination potential of four plum varieties: Fall Fiesta, Songold, Ruby Star and Autumn Treat.
The study revealed important differences in the pollen viability and grain counts of these varieties, offering crucial guidance for growers aiming to optimise fruit set and yield.
Jaimee Harris, head of research at Bee-Tech, spoke to Farmer’s Weekly about the findings. She explained that the study, which assessed the pollen viability and grain counts of each variety under controlled conditions, found that Autumn Treat emerged as the top performer, with the highest pollen viability at 45%.
This was accompanied by a robust count of 2 000 grains per flower, making it an excellent candidate for pollination and breeding programmes.
“The high viability and substantial pollen count of Autumn Treat meant more effective pollination. When the pollen is viable, it has a higher chance of fertilising the flower, ensuring better fruit set,” Harris said.
