In a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Manufacturing & The Role of the Human Workforce’, moderated by Sujatha Vishnuraj, Editor, Manufacturing Today India, experts explored how emerging technologies are transforming jobs and the need for upskilling to ensure a balanced future of machines and people.
Embracing automation
The main concern with the advancements in technologies is the fact that they will replace human labour.
Here, Rajnish Damani, Executive DirectorManufacturing Operations, Bridgestone India, highlighted that despite advancements in automation and AI, the human workforce remains essential. While technology is transforming manufacturing with predictive analytics, condition-based monitoring, and automated inspections, human intervention is needed for tasks like process corrections and machine maintenance. “Workflows must adapt and coexist with automation and AI,” he said. Industries like tire manufacturing, which involve continuous processes, rely on human involvement to ensure efficiency and quality. These advancements are also creating new roles for workers in machine operation and data-driven decision-making.
The importance of reskilling and education
The most effective way to manage the balance between emerging technologies and human labour is skilling and upskilling.
On some of the skills required, Shamshul Khan, HR Leader-Operations & RD, Kenvue (JNTL Consumer Health (India) Pvt Ltd), stated, “Building capabilities around digital transformation is crucial for the workforce of the future.” He further insisted that companies must consider three core values: experience, exposure and education. This can be done by training employees to be conversant with new technologies.
