Kanilea's Kai Huli: Treasures from the Tide
PEN WORLD|August 2022
While walking the coastline during trips to Hawaii, Hugh and Karol Scher of Kanilea Pen Co. enjoy roaming the beaches early in the morning to see what treasures the ocean tide turned up in the night.
Kanilea's Kai Huli: Treasures from the Tide

That experience provides the impetus for Kanilea's first new pen collection type since its launch in 2016.

In Hawaiian, Kai Huli means "a sea that dashes and recedes" and describes the daily tidal process that brings treasures such as sea shells, driftwood, and other items to the beach each morning. The new Kanilea Kai Huli collection of fountain pens is likewise ever-changing and specially created to reflect the colors and textures of the Hawaiian Islands.

Once again, the French atelier S.T. Dupont has found inspiration from its own archive of guilloche engraving. The new S.T. Dupont Monogram 1872 collection's ridged guilloche pattern is based on a pattern from the 1950s and is a combination of smooth, ridged, horizontal, vertical, and parallel lines combined in an italic motif that speaks to pure mid-20th-century elegance.
