Last week was no exception when the two actresses appeared on the green carpet for the UK premiere of the hotly anticipated musical – the final stop of the worldwide rollout.
Both stars have used “method dressing” for their press tour wardrobe – a growing Hollywood trend – incorporating the pink and green colour palette of their characters with a nod to the musical’s surreal, magical aesthetic.
Ariana has been channelling her character Glinda’s love of pink – last week’s sunshine-yellow was a rare departure – in a series of princess dresses and fairytale gowns created with her stylist Mimi Cuttrell.
In contrast, Cynthia, who plays green-skinned Elphaba, has worked alongside her stylist Jason Bolden to wear a palette of greens along with top-to-toe black in structural shapes with additional embellishments and detail – extraordinary talon-like nails, dramatic headpieces and heels. High-end couture designers – from Dior to Louis Vuitton, Versace to Erdem – have been stunningly showcased at various premieres, award ceremonies and galas.
The pair’s love of fashion made them a delight to work with for costume designer Paul Tazewell. “They’re both clothing people. They have their own sense of style, which was exciting to share,” he said in an exclusive interview with hello!. “And they were courageous – we really pushed some extremes with how we were creating character.”
