Before Mickey 17, Toni Collette had never accepted a role without reading the script - but working with Mark Ruffalo was worth it

It isn’t every day that actresses of Toni Collette’s calibre agree to take a role without having read the script – but when it came to the latest film by Parasite director Bong Joon-ho, the Australian star was prepared to make an exception.

“It’s something I’ve never done before,” she says of her new role in sci-fi comedy Mickey 17. “I still can’t believe Bong asked me to come on this adventure with him.”

New adventures often carry life lessons, as Toni’s co-star Robert Pattinson discovers in the film’s title role, as he colonises an ice planet.

But when it comes to the life lesson Toni is still conquering, she says her focus remains on letting go of control. “I live more in that space now and it’s much easier,” she says.

And although she is keen to take new opportunities, it is her children who keep her on her toes.

“I learn from them,” she has said. “I named my daughter Sage because I felt as though she was already teaching me in the womb, and she has continued to do that.”
